Overview

Elevate your photography with a truly unique piece of Soviet cinematic history. This is a classic RO-108-1 (РО-108-1) 90mm f/2 film projection lens, originally designed to project 35mm movies in large cinemas. Today, we’ve given it a new life by custom-mounting this robust optical block into a high-precision focusing helicoid.

Equipped with the premium early Red "P" (П) anti-reflective coating, this lens delivers unbelievable subject separation, a dreamy vintage glow, and character-rich, swirly bokeh that modern clinical lenses simply cannot replicate.

⚠️ EXPERIMENTAL LENS – SOLD "AS IS" (Portrait & Close-Up Only): Please read carefully before purchasing. Due to the highly specific, custom-adapted nature of this cinema projection block, this lens does NOT focus to infinity and has no adjustable aperture. It is strictly an experimental tool crafted for stunning bust-level portraits (head and shoulders) and close-up macro details. Because of its unique, non-standard optical characteristics and heavy vintage condition, this item is sold strictly "AS IS" for creative photography. Please ensure you fully understand these limitations before buying.

Why This Specific Version is Special:

• Dedicated Portrait Specialist: As mentioned above, it is designed solely for close-up and portrait work, offering a unique shooting experience you won't find in standard lenses.
• True Cinematic Fixed Aperture: Built for projection, it shoots wide open at an incredibly fast f/2.0 at all times, ensuring maximum background blur and a distinct 35mm film aesthetic.
• Custom M42 Adaptation: Professionally fitted with a brand-new aluminum focusing helicoid, bridging the gap between vintage cinema projection and your modern digital camera.
• Early Premium Quality: Features the iconic Red "P" coating, known for its distinct color rendering and classic vintage contrast.

Compatibility (DSLR & Mirrorless Cameras)

Because this lens features a custom M42 screw mount, it is incredibly easy to adapt for its intended portrait/macro purposes:

• DSLR Cameras: Can be adapted for portrait/macro work to systems like Canon EF, Pentax K, and others using a simple, affordable M42 adapter.
• Mirrorless Cameras: Works flawlessly for close-up and portrait photography on all modern systems via an M42 adapter, including Sony E-mount, Fujifilm X, Canon RF, Nikon Z, Leica L, and Micro Four Thirds.

Condition Report

• Sale Terms: Sold "AS IS" due to its experimental, custom-adapted nature and fixed limitations.
• Optics: Excellent vintage condition. The glass elements are clean and clear. No fungus, no heavy scratches, no separation, and no haze. Note: As with any vintage lens, minor internal micro-dust particles may be visible under harsh light, which is completely normal and has zero impact on image quality.
• Mechanics: The newly added custom helicoid manual focus ring turns smoothly and evenly throughout its specific portrait/macro range.
• Cosmetics: Authentic "battle-scarred" vintage condition. While the custom silver helicoid is brand new, the original black projector barrel shows noticeable paint wear, scratches, and heavy patina consistent with decades of use in a cinema booth. We love this look — it tells a true story of its cinematic past!
